CN Tower Bows to Burj Dubai

For many Torontonians, today was just another day. The hustle and bustle, going back and forth from one downtown destination to another never skipped a beat.

Amidst all the usual commotion on streetlevel, one silent building taller than all the rest lost its significant status as being world’s tallest freestanding structure – that being the CN Tower – the Canadian icon that puts us on the map for our internationally acclaimed architectural and engineering prowess has finally been dwarfed by a new even taller structure; the Burj in Dubai.

Since April 2nd 1975, the CN Tower has held the Guinness Book of World Records Tallest Freestanding Structure at a completed full height (antenna and all) at 553.3 metres. This record, held for 32 years has finally been awarded to the Burj Dubai as of September 13th, 2007, where construction has surpassed the CN Tower, with a height at 555.3m, and continues to rise to it’s full and final height of a planned 818m!

The Beginning of Something Healthy

For some time, there was a small band of people that would get together and play some pick-up footy (soccer, international football) at the base of the hill at Riverdale Park East in Toronto.

I joined them in 2002, and loved getting back to my roots in the sport, but found it was tough to get this rag-tag group to come out on a constant basis to play.

So with some thought and communication with other people in other sporting leagues, I decided to officially organize a league for the summer of 2003, under the banner: Downtown Soccer Toronto.

With very little sponsorship, a lot of hard work and persistent promotion; a league was born.

What started out with 80 members in it’s first year, to now an overflowing 200 members across 10 teams, DST has been a source of sport and enjoyment for many. A community of friends & family, of people who are like-minded in the healthy athletic lifestyle that still like to have a good chuckle over a drink down at the pub after an intense game.

My plan was to spend roughly around three years to get this league off the ground and started.
Having completed my term, I still offer my dedication in smaller capacities.

Thankfully, the league will continue to sustain itself for many years to come – filled with people who value its existence and reap the rewards of the effort they put into it…

…after all, it wouldn’t be a league without them – and I’m glad to call them all my friends.
