Goodbye tSc…

At the end of December 2007, I read somewhere that the year of 2008 would be “the year of change”.

While I don’t necessarily subscribe to the thought that we are completely stagnant some years and others not, I do however think that the amount of change from year to year would tend to have its ebbs and flows overall.

That being said, a large portion of this year has been spent making pivotal decisions to change my career, from working at The Shopping Channel to going back to school so that I can pursue my dream of teaching the discipline of Design, and doing so with positive social change.

Today, after almost 7 years with the company, I sent in my official resignation to The Shopping Channel.

This was no easy decision, and I have spent a lot of energy towards furthering my career.
Through applying and collecting information, filling out forms and attending workshops, negotiating and putting my feelers out, I’ve set myself up to attend studies this fall at the acclaimed up-and-coming Ontario College of Art & Design in the downtown of Toronto, Canada.
I also had to think about my income and my future, and the lifestyle that I would leaving behind and what lifestyle I could carry onward.

One constant thing that has gotten me through it all is knowing: if I want it really bad, I will make it all work out. I will jump the hoops. I will make the sacrifices. And, in the end I will reap the benefits.

I wanted to thank everyone that I worked with at The Shopping Channel.

These people are dedicated and hard-working. I know this because we all worked in one of the hardest lines of business to work in: RAPID-RETAIL. It’s not easy trying to satisfy one of the world’s most unique market of customers without having real-time in-person physical interaction.

I know that I will miss working alongside many of my co-workers, however, I know I will see them again down the road sooner or later in our travels.

I wish everyone the best, and hope that they are finding too, that this year is the year of change.

Some things may change…

Below is an essay that I recently wrote for an entrance application to York University’s joint Bachelor of Design Undergraduate program with Sheridan College.

Entrants were asked to read an excerpt from an essay, summarize in our own words, the points made and then pick two of the points and find 2 examples that illustrate the points.
Needless to say, I did a lot of hack and slashing.

Mark James Joseph Kormendy (1964-2008)

Today I mourn the loss of my brother.

With his siblings and parents at his side, Mark James Joseph Kormendy peacefully passed away in Guelph General Hospital at 5 minutes to 3pm.

With ironic grace there could be no better opportunity to say goodbye, with family at your side.

Mark, I already miss you so much.

Hong Kong Trip Photos

About a year and a bit ago (to the date of this post) I went on a trip to Hong Kong for Christmas 2006, and New Years to ring in 2007. It was an amazing trip, and I spent it with my buddy Scott, his mother and brother’s family. I had a great time and took many photos of which I built a nice online gallery to display the trip from start to finish. I took down the gallery for sometime, but kept finding myself revisiting it from time to time. So, instead of putting it back up and taking it down, I’m going to leave it up here:

Christmas & New Years 2006/2007: Hong Kong
Please don’t steal my pictures. I am a graphic designer and regularly check all of the online stock-photo websites and constantly surf the net.

workedover.ca Theme Progress

I’ve been spending the past couple months working in my spare time on a Wordpress theme for Scott McEwan’s website workedover.ca.

It incorporates some really great technologies:

  • sIFR (custom fonts using flash)
  • Mootools (javascript/ajax framework)
  • nexGen Gallery plugin for Wordpress
  • Wordpress (obviously)
  • … and some custom scripts, code and applications that I’ve built on my own

Go check it out and let me know what you think so far.

(Remember, this is an artist’s journal and online gallery, so it’s high on visual elegance yet simplistic and usable)
